Before you start work on building your decking, it is important to check that you have the necessary permissions or authorisations. In practical terms, if you are a homeowner, the decking area you plan is less than 20 m2 and is not particularly high, you will probably not require any specific permissions or authorisations. However, for a terrace of more than 20m2 or one that is raised (generally by more than 40 cm), you will need a notice of intended building alterations or a construction permit (depending on your specific situation). For further information, our advice is to contact your local planning department directly.
The natural timbers most commonly used for decking are pine, larch and teak. All these timbers are resistant to weather and insects.
