Frequently Asked Questions

The most frequently asked questions to our experts

How wide should an external staircase be ?

Our Modulesca® concept is 93.4 cm wide.

Which finish should you choose for your terrace on pedestals?

For your terrace slabs on pedestals, the choice of one type of side finish over another depends mainly on your taste in outdoor design.

For a finish similar to light or beige slabs, such as imitation travertine, choose the pearl white RAL 1013 profile.

For a finish with darker slabs closer to grey, choose the anthracite grey RAL 7016 profile.

If you prefer an industrial or even metallic look, we recommend choosing the aluminium grey profile range.

If you prefer to keep the same colour as your tiles on the rest of your terrace, then we recommend opting for a finish with cut tiles and the use of slab plates and side cladding supports.

What height can be reached with these extensions and pedestals ?

The 10 mm extension allows you to add up to 40 mm of height to your CLEMAN® or EASIO® adjustable pedestal. This means that by using the tallest pedestal in each range, you can achieve a height of up to 270 mm.

If needed, a 60 mm extension is also available.

What is the maximum permissible load for self-levelling riser pedestals?

All self-levelling riser pedestals have the same maximum permissible load of 1 tonne. Imagine that! One tonne is the weight of an adult giraffe.

How are Jouplast® ridged wedges used?

These wedges are used directly beneath joists or any other joinery components requiring height adjustment. There are a number of rules governing their positioning:

  • Provide clearance of at least 10 mm where joists are laid parallel to the direction of water flow; 20 mm where joists are laid at right angles to the direction of water flow.
  • Leave the recommended spacing of 70 cm between wedges (depending on joist cross-section and type of timber).
  • Space joists at 50 cm centres when using natural timber decking boards, and at 40 cm centres when using composite boards (check with the manufacturer).

Wedges can be screwed, glued or nailed in place to ensure optimum fixing.

How many Cleman® 130/230 riser pedestals are required for terrace construction?

Depending on the area of the terrace and the format of paving used, the number of riser pedestals required will vary. Nevertheless:

  • For a 20 m² terrace paved with 60 x 60 cm ceramic tiles, 4 riser pedestals per m², so 80 riser pedestals in all.
  • For a 40 m² terrace paved with 80 x 80 cm paving slabs, 7 riser pedestals per m², so 280 riser pedestals in all.

These quantities should be adapted according to the type of paving used and the recommendations of the manufacturer.

What is the Cleman® adjustable 55/80 riser pedestal used for?

Designed and used to create tiled, ceramic or paved terraces for pedestrian use, the Cleman® 55/80 adjustable riser pedestal has a three-stage adjustment system: pre-setting using the driver bit, manual setting using the screw adjuster, and final adjustment using the special adjustment wrench. Its square base facilitates terrace corner installation, while its integrated paved terrace side cladding supports ensure a perfect finish. This riser pedestal is compatible with self-supporting paving compliant with French classification T7, T11, or F+, regardless of format. Not suitable for use with the paved side finishing plate.

How to choose the right garden edging for your project?

Here are the criteria to consider when choosing garden border edging:

  • Which areas you want to border: flowerbeds, footpaths, lawns or aggregate?
  • How would you like your outdoor space to look: modern, rustic, minimalist or contemporary?
  • Which material do you prefer in terms of appearance: stone, metal, composite, concrete or plastic?
  • What is your budget: metal, plastic and stone are more expensive, but will last longer. Timber is often more affordable, but tends to deteriorate more easily.
  • What level of maintenance are you looking for: natural materials like timber and stone require regular upkeep to avoid deterioration. Plastic, composites and metal offer greater weather and frost resistance.

How long does it take to lay decking using Fixego®?

It takes around 10-15% longer to lay decking using Fixego® than with conventional methods. The fact that the initial preparation stage requires greater accuracy, explains why it takes a little longer. The time taken to prepare and install joists is the same.

How is the Jouplast® paving grab used?

To use the Jouplast® paving grab, simply hold the ergonomic handle tightly to maintain a secure grip on the paving slab. For user safety, it is important to handle this tool with care, especially when moving paving slabs.

What is the 2.5% slope corrector for Essentiel riser pedestals used for?

The 2.5% slope corrector for Essentiel riser pedestals compensates for gently sloping ground when constructing a terrace on riser pedestals. Positioned directly under the riser pedestal, it provides up to 2.5% of slope correction to ensure a flat, stable terrace surface. Its use is essential to ensure optimum installation of paving slabs or decking joists, especially on gently sloping sites.

What is the MODULESCA® 3-piece joist kit used for?

The MODULESCA 3-piece joist kit is designed to simplify the process of timber cladding MODULESCA® steps. It comprises one 21 cm central joist and two 35 cm side joists. These joists are manufactured from autoclaved (class 4) pine and pre-cut to accurate dimensions to simplify installation and ensure precise adjustment when applying the timber cladding.

How to maintain and clean a ceramic terrace?

After installing ceramic tiles on pedestals, it is important to maintain your outdoor arrangement. We recommend regularly cleaning your surface by sweeping to remove dead leaves or debris and to facilitate the drainage of rainwater through the gaps between the tiles. Use a high-pressure cleaner occasionally, but not too often, to avoid damaging the tiles.

Which paving stones should you choose for optimal stability?

Our paving stone stabiliser is suitable for all concrete paving stones measuring 15 x 15 cm and 6 cm high. We also allow stone or sandstone paving stones, even though they are less common because they are more expensive.

We recommend choosing paving stones with smooth sides without protrusions. The paving stones must not be aged. Often when they are aged, they have been tapped and have irregularities. This makes them unique and attractive but uneven. Using this type of paving stone would make installation and traffic on our paving stone stabilisers unstable.

The manufacturing tolerance according to standard NF EN 1338 is +/-3mm on the 150 mm side.

This type of paving stone is easily found in DIY superstores or building material suppliers.

What is the lifespan of our stabilization tiles ?

Our stabilisation slabs for paddocks and agricultural land are guaranteed for 10 years in accordance with our general terms and conditions of sale and installation advice, as are all our products.

How much weight can a wooden deck on pedestals support ?

Jouplast® pedestals have a crush resistance test rating of over 1 tonne. However, the weight that a wooden deck on pedestals can support does not depend solely on the strength of the pedestals.

Each type of wood has its own strength. We therefore advise you to check with your wood supplier for more specific information.

More generally, if you plan to place a heavy item on your decking on pedestals, such as a spa, for example, we recommend that you opt for our PROFILDECK® solution (aluminium joists), which will allow for better weight distribution across the structure of the wooden decking on pedestals.

Does composite rot ?

No, composite has several characteristics that make it resistant to rot. The mixture of wood fibre and plastic makes the material rot-proof and therefore resistant to weathering and insect infestation.

What is the ideal step height for an outdoor staircase ?

The Modulesca® step measures 17 cm high x 93.4 cm wide and 42.4 cm deep.

The 20 cm module measures 17 cm high x 20 cm wide and 42.4 cm deep.

Can I install finishing touches on a sloped terrace or uneven ground?

Yes, terrace finishing profiles, slab plates and side cladding supports are compatible with sloped terraces and uneven ground.

In reality, it is not our finishing accessories that adapt to the slope, but the decking pedestal. By adjusting the pedestal, it is possible to compensate for a slope or uneven ground and thus finish your decking on pedestals using our finishing profiles or side cladding support and slab plate.

However, we strongly advise you to prepare your ground properly in order to obtain a flat and even surface without any unpleasant surprises in the form of poorly controlled slopes. For more details, watch our video on ground preparation.

What depth of gravel should be added above the level of the stabilisation module?

Our recommendation is to fill the honeycomb tiles to the top with crushed gravel graded to between 5 mm (min.) and 16 mm (max.).
