Frequently Asked Questions

The most frequently asked questions to our experts

What is the lifespan of a wooden deck?

The lifespan of a wooden deck depends mainly on the quality of the structure.

That is why we advise you not to neglect this part of the deck, even though it is hidden.

When installing your decking, you must ensure that the weight is evenly distributed, that the structure is ventilated and protected from rainwater with a protective strip, that the boards are spaced correctly, etc. All these details matter.

To ensure your wooden deck on pedestals has a long life, it is also important to maintain it regularly. To do this, remember to protect and clean it regularly. Take care of your wood, and it will take care of you!

Which decking boards are compatible with the Fixego® solution?

Fixego® is not suitable for composite boards or wood species that are knotty or unstable, such as acacia.

Before installation, check that the screws provided are compatible with the wood species used, as some species are not suitable.

How much weight can Jouplast® stabilising grids support?

All our stabilisation grids can support weights that are perfectly suited to traffic:

  • Alveplac® and Greenplac® can support up to 600 t/m² when filled with gravel or grass.
  • Urbangravel® can support up to 800 t/m² when filled with gravel.
  • The entire URBANIT® range, designed for heavier traffic, can support up to 1000 t/m² with grass, gravel or paving stones.

The mechanical strength of our grids is the fundamental criterion in our development process to ensure soil stability.

How much weight can a raised decking withstand?

Jouplast® pedestals have a crush resistance of over 1 tonne. However, the weight that an elevated wooden deck on pedestals can support does not depend solely on the strength of the pedestals.

Each type of wood has its own strength. We therefore advise you to consult your timber supplier for more precise information on this.

More generally, if you are planning to place a heavy item on your deck on pedestals, such as a hot tub or a pergola for example, we recommend opting for our PROFILDECK® solution, which will better distribute the weight across the structure of the deck.

How wide should an external staircase be ?

Our Modulesca® concept is 93.4 cm wide.

What is the Essentiel® 10mm pedestal height extender used for?

The Essentiel® 10mm pedestal height extender is used to increase the height of patio pedestals. Suitable for raised patios surfaced using timber decking tiles. This height extender is ideal for those situations where additional height is required to compensate for a slope or to achieve a precise patio height.

What are Jouplast snappable flat packers used for?

Jouplast snappable flat packers are used to pack out small gaps. Available in several thicknesses (2, 3 and 5 mm), they are ideal for adjusting joinery elements, compensating for irregularities and ensuring correct spacing between materials. Their snappable design makes them suitable for many different uses, and adaptable to meet the needs of each project. They provide excellent stability and compressive strength.

Which products is it compatible with?

The Jouplast® square gripper/isolation mat is compatible with the Cleman® and Essentiel® ranges of paving pedestals.

How is the Cleman® self-levelling 40/55 patio pedestal used?

The Cleman® self-levelling 40/55 patio pedestal can be used on uneven ground or an existing concrete slab. Its three-stage adjustment system (pre-setting using the driver bit, manual setting using the screw adjuster, and final adjustment using the special adjustment wrench) guarantees fast and precise installation. A pedestal must be positioned under each corner of each paving slab, in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer.

Why use MODULESCA® 93 cm steps?

What is the Jouplast® paving lifter used for?

The Jouplast® paving lifter is a tool designed to easily lift the slabs of a terrace constructed using riser pedestals. It facilitates access to technical components beneath the terrace, such as riser pedestals, electrical cables or spotlights. This accessory is particularly useful for raised terrace care and maintenance.

What height can be achieved using these extenders?

The paved side finishing plate support kit can be used to raise the height below paving by between 65 and 105 mm. Stacking 2 extenders can then add a further 40 mm in height.

Are Essentiel® 25mm patio pedestal height extenders stackable?

No, we recommend that only one height extender is used per patio pedestal. We do not recommend stacking of these height extenders, because doing so may compromise the stability and strength of the finished patio.

What are the standards and regulations to follow when building an exotic wood deck?

Building a deck on adjustable pedestals with exotic wood requires adhering to certain standards and regulations to ensure safety, durability, and compliance with local regulations. Here are the main points to consider:

Local Regulations:

  • PLU (Local Urban Plan): Check with your local town hall for specific rules in your municipality. Some areas may have particular restrictions, especially regarding height and aesthetics.

Declarations and Permits:

  • No formalities if the deck is less than 5 m² and at ground level.
  • Prior declaration for a deck between 5 m² and 20 m².
  • Building permit for a deck over 20 m² or elevated more than 60 cm.

Construction Standards:

  • Minimum Height: A minimum height of 64 mm is recommended to ensure the deck’s stability.
  • Accessibility for People with Reduced Mobility (PMR): If the deck needs to be accessible, comply with accessibility standards, such as a maximum slope of 6% for ramps and a minimum width of 90 cm.

Installation Techniques:

  • Ground Stabilization: Use adjustable pedestals placed on a geotextile to prevent vegetation growth under the deck.
  • Drainage: Ensure a minimum slope of 1 to 2% to drain rainwater and avoid stagnation.

Can the grids be installed on a sloping surface?

Installation on slopes of up to 15% is possible for vehicular traffic (integrated anchoring system).

How much weight can Jouplast® stabilisation grids support?

All our stabilisation grids can support weights that are perfectly suited to traffic.

Greenplac® can support up to 600 t/m² when filled with grass.

The mechanical strength of our grids is the fundamental criterion in our development process, ensuring soil stability.

How long does it take to install a deck with Fixego®?

Installing a deck with Fixego® takes approximately 10 to 15% longer than traditional installation methods. The initial installation requires greater precision and therefore takes a little longer. However, preparing and installing the boards takes the same amount of time.

Do I need planning permission to build a raised patio?

Whether you will need planning permission or not to create your raised terrace patio will depend, among other things, on the height, the surface, the type of patio you envision, and its location. We advise you to contact your city’s council before starting any construction work to check the local building codes that apply to your situation.

When is the best time to build my raised decking?

The best times to install a raised decking area are spring and autumn, as the temperatures are milder. However, installing a raised patio requires little ground preparation. It is therefore entirely possible to install it in the winter.
